Espace Transmission, 5435 Avenue des Érables, Montréal, Québec, Canada, H2H 2E8

Description

For our first edition, the theme we chose for the festival was “breaking new ground.” As one of only eight trans film festivals in the world and the first ever in our city, we were quite literally attempting something very few had done before. The 2024 edition aimed to capture the breadth and diversity of trans filmmaking, complicating the already murky understanding of “trans cinema.” What even counts as trans cinema anyway?

Many LGBTQIA2S+ film festivals group trans films along identitarian lines. We decided to do the opposite: across our 13 screenings, we chose to focus on the issues, experiences, and aesthetics that mattered to trans folks across the world. Our festival honed in on what trans did, not what trans was. At Exposures, audiences found films that turned to ecology, death, loss, and discrimination alongside films about cowboys, hyperpop, and hilarious situations. There was something in there for everyone, regardless of age, background, or interests.

And people brought their kids, friends, lovers, and family to experience four days of great trans cinema.

  • Hand-drawn illustration of a young brown skinned girl swinging a golf club and gazing towards the right. Her long and voluminous curly brown hair is in a ponytail and she is wearing a purple tank, skirt, and arm warmers. A yellow smiley face with the words "Daze 1998" is printed in the centre of her tank top. Behind her is her unassuming coach, a fair-skinned trans masc chef wearing chef attire and a digital device strapped to their belt. The poster background is a soft and cheerful gradient shifting from light blue to a pale orange. On each of the four corners there is one symbol: a keychain, a purple bow, a charm bracelet, and a blue Nintendo Game Boy original console. The title of the film is written at the top of the poster in purple text that looks like it was drawn with a child's marker. Above the bottom right corner is the film's tagline: "Life's too short... to play dead."
