Description

The tape examines the role played by colonial writing about indigenous peoples in obscuring and distorting this tradition, and touches on the work of Two-Spirit peoples to reclaim traditional gender and sexuality roles.

“Vancouver’s 6th Annual Lesbian & Gay Film/Video Festival.” Out on Screen, 1994.

Created as a student project in the Native American Studies Department of the University of California at Berkeley, this video is an overview of historical and contemporary Native American concepts of gender, sex and sexual orientation. The documentary explores the tradition in which individuals who embody feminine and masculine qualities act as a conduit between the physical and spiritual world, and because of this are placed in positions of power within the community.
