Description

Often hailed as acclaimed Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan's "coming out" film, Yang ± Yin: Gender in Chinese Cinema takes an intimate look at homoerotic undercurrents and cross-gender expressions in a century of Chinese cinema. Rare archival footage of Chinese-language films from the 1930s-1990s is interwoven with Kwan's reflections on his gay sexuality, feminine sensibility and relation to his parents. The director conducts candid and highly personal interviews with his famous colleagues, which include directors John Woo, Chen Kaige, Ang Lee, Tsui Hark, Tsai Ming-liang and actor Leslie Cheung. A treat for film buffs, and an eye-opener for anyone who thinks queer cinema began in the West.
