Often hailed as acclaimed Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan's "coming out" film, Yang
± Yin: Gender in Chinese Cinema takes an intimate look at homoerotic undercurrents
and cross-gender expressions in a century of Chinese cinema. Rare archival footage
of Chinese-language films from the 1930s-1990s is interwoven with Kwan's reflections
on his gay sexuality, feminine sensibility and relation to his parents. The director
conducts candid and highly personal interviews with his famous colleagues, which include
directors John Woo, Chen Kaige, Ang Lee, Tsui Hark, Tsai Ming-liang and actor Leslie
Cheung. A treat for film buffs, and an eye-opener for anyone who thinks queer cinema
began in the West.
