Description

Gary, a 39 year-old successful animation artist and devout Christian, is pursuing a lifelong dream — to become a woman. Metamorphosis is a candid, non-sensational and sometimes humorous journey of nearly three years as Gary prepares physically and emotionally for sex reassignment surgery. Along the way, the film raises provocative questions about what really makes us men and women.

For the tens of thousands of people who are unhappy with their gender, a condition known as gender dysphoria, a sex change seems to be the answer. In this program, Gary, who has felt awkwardness at being male even as a child, elects to take the big step at the age of 36. Metamorphosis: Man Into Woman traces his progress over a three-year period as he endures the physical procedures necessary to look like a woman. These involve electrolysis to deal with facial hair, hormone replacement, and plastic surgery. His co-workers share their thoughts, and Gary learns that womanhood has its complexities when he transforms into Gabi.
