The contemporary Native American reinterpretation of past gender roles, reread in the light of contemporary gender politics, positions American Indians' view of gender and sexuality in opposition to mainstream gay and transgender cultures. Their special view on spirituality, mirrored by the sacred unification of masculine and feminine features on one body, opens a new dimension to the reflection on the role of alternative genders in the contemporary Euro-American world. Emerging Two-spirit identities of urban Native Americans are discussed in this work-in-progress done by producer Randy Burns of the Paiute nation, co-founder of Gay American Indians in San Francisco in 1978 and by anthropologist and writer/researcher Max Carocci and director-producer Marco Puccioni. Also a very personal work for the writer, if completion funds can be found, the finished film will go on to include the viewpoints of more traditional Two-spirit people still living in rural areas and reservation.
