Biography

Michelle Lawler is a Los Angeles-based cinematographer working in film and television. Michelle has shot several television shows including HBO’s Emmy award winning “Insecure” (2020) and Lena Waithe’s “Twenties” (2020). She recently finished shooting eight episodes of “The Shrink Next Door” for Apple TV based on the popular podcast. The show was directed by Michael Showalter and stars Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd and Kathryn Hahn. Currently, she is beginning photography on a new show for Hulu entitled “The Dropout” (2022) based on Elizabeth Holmes story, the founder Theranos with Amanda Seyfried starring. In 2020 Michelle was included in Variety’s “10 Cinematographers to Watch.” She has an MFA in Cinematography from The American Film Institute (AFI) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Cinema from San Francisco State University where she was the departmental Honoree of her graduating class. When Michelle is not shooting, she can be found teaching her dog Judy to be friendlier to squirrels while she fosters a newfound gardening habit.

Michelle Lawler is a Los Angeles-based cinematographer working in film and television since 1999. Her first feature documentary FOREVER’S GONNA START TONIGHT won numerous audience awards including Outfest LA 2010. Michelle has shot several award-winning short films including YOU’RE DEAD TO ME which recently won the Imagen Award for Best Short Film 2014, as well as two feature films — Outfest Grand Jury Award winner WILDNESS directed by Wu Tsang, and BEST FRIENDS FOREVER starring and directed by Brea Grant. Michelle co-created and lensed the widely-lauded comedy web series HUDSON VALLEY BALLERS — recently greenlit for a second season in 2015 — with Saturday Night Live veterans Paula Pell and James Anderson, starring Paul Rudd and Kate McKinnon, and shot RODS & CONES written by and starring Beth Lisick and Tara Jepsen. She has worked on several pieces for exhibition at MoMA, the Hammer Museum, the 2013 Venice Biennale and the 2012 Whitney Biennial. Michelle is a departmental honoree in Cinema Studies at SF State, an alumnus of the Cinematography Fellowship at Film Independent, and holds an MFA in Cinematography from the American Film Institute.
