Annalise Ophelian (they/she) is a queer, gender non-conforming documentary filmmaker, licensed clinical psychologist, and consultant based in San Francisco, whose work includes Diagnosing Difference (2009), MAJOR! (2015), and Looking for Leia (2019). Dr. Ophelian’s film work challenges the power structure of traditional documentary filmmaking by centering participants as key collaborators in the storytelling process. They’re interested in intersectional stories of social justice, and how targeted communities use resilience as a form of resistance. Their work has been made possible with grant support from the Arcus Foundation, Horizons Foundation, Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, San Francisco Arts Commission, Seed&Spark in conjunction with WeTransfer, and Transforming Justice / Tides Foundation. Dr. Ophelian’s consultation services include providing LGBTQA+ and kink/BDSM cultural competency, as well as anti-oppression/anti-colonial best practices, to media makers, health care providers, design and technology professionals, and educators. They are a member of Reps On Set, a team of production advisors, Intimacy Coordinators, and advocates for underrepresented identities in film and television.
