Carman Spoto is a filmmaker and film theorist from the Philadelphia area who now works and resides in Los Angeles, California. Through Swine Films, her production company, Carman has directed, written, and produced three feature films: Phaesporia, Hylo, and Going Under, and multiple short films including Soless , Antenna, Regardless of Time, This Planeta Wasn’t Made for Us, and Beaux. (Note: Although Carman does the work that historically is associated with the title "director" she prefers an all-encompassing use of the the title Cinematographer) In 2015 Carman was awarded an Art and Change Grant from the Leeway Foundation in Philadelphia to create the Philadelphia Radical Film Collective, a resource for democratizing acces to films, film theory, filmmaking education, and using video against the state. Furthermore, Carman writes and studies political and cinema theory and is working to bridge the gaps between the two. In 2016 she became a fellow through Outfest and the LA LGBT Center’s Outset program. Through the program, she wrote and directed her short film Soless, which premiered at Outfest 2016 in Los Angeles.
