alana amore colvin (she/they) is a guitarist and Afro-American composer. colvin’s work is rooted in Black American traditions, often holding elements of humor and play. Their intention is set around creating a beautiful and intimate sonic space through harmony and improvisation. colvin is prone to write pieces that are committed to challenge environments that have historically excluded Black bodies. She often refers to her work as “quiet protest music.” In her sonic restlessness colvin plays in several bands, including the Bushwick indie band eisenach, the soul-jazz guitar and bass duo Black Tortoise, consisting of colvin and Julian Silva, as well as the soft-spoken-alt-rock-contemporary string trio unspecified, featuring Conner Simmons and Sunjay Jayaram. She is the guitarist, composer, and band leader behind The Alco, a free-soul-jazz ensemble that acts as a conglomerate of all her musical practices. colvin has been commissioned to write for The Cleveland Classical Guitar Society as well as the violin and cello duo, Duo Indigo.
