Biography

Ali Cotterill is an award-winning nonbinary American filmmaker and editor based in Amsterdam, NL. Ali founded the drag king collective DK PDX in Portland, OR and toured with them throughout 2003-2006. In 2007, they moved into film by working as the post-production supervisor on the documentary feature Exotic World and the Burlesque Revival and directing music videos for queer bands like Athens Boys Choir, Scream Club, and Nicky Click. They were the lead editor on the queer documentaries United in Anger: A History of ACT UP (2012), which debuted at MOMA’s Documentary Fortnight and won Best Feature at the Milan and Pittsburgh LGBTQ film festivals and All We’ve Got (2019), which was broadcast on PBS in 2023. Their feature directorial debut, North Pole, NY, premiered at IFF Boston 2018 and picked up the Audience Award for Best Feature at the Indie Street Film Festival. They self-booked a four week sold-out theatrical run during Christmas season 2018. Outside of filmmaking, Ali loves retro video games, epic road trips, and chasing total eclipses.
